Advantages of conventional PCB

1. Simple Via models
2. Low Cost (until layers count comes too high)
3. Simple dielectrics—Primarily FR-4
4. High reliability (until layer count becomes too high)

Disadvantages of conventional PCB

1. Fewer vendors can obtain good yields, costs skyrocket
2. Via has to be large, reducing route-ability, increasing layers
3. Difficult to implement for BGA pin-pitches below 1mm
4. Through hole vias capacitively couple to every plane layer and signal losses increase with thickness
5. Long via stubs create impedance mismatches, reflections on single-ended nets
6. Large via pads often force diff pairs to be split under BGAs
